Ethics & Academic Integrity

Good support should strengthen your work without taking ownership of it away from you.

There is a difference between getting thoughtful research support and handing over responsibility for your education. We take that difference seriously. DissertationKey exists to help nursing students and researchers work through difficult academic and research tasks with more clarity, while keeping authorship, understanding and academic responsibility where they belong; with the student or researcher.

Where we draw the line

Research is collaborative by nature. Students discuss ideas with supervisors, librarians help build searches, statisticians advise on analysis, writing centres help people communicate more clearly, and research teams routinely divide methodological tasks. Asking for help is not, by itself, an academic integrity problem. The important questions are what kind of help is being used, what your institution permits, and whether you remain intellectually responsible for the work.

Our role is to provide research guidance, methodological support, academic feedback, editing, explanation and structured assistance appropriate to the project. We want you to leave a piece of work understanding it better than when you arrived. We will not help someone impersonate another student in an exam, complete a live or proctored assessment, falsify research, fabricate data or misrepresent work in a way that breaches institutional rules.

Your work must remain yours

Support should help you understand, strengthen and complete your research responsibly. You should be able to explain the choices in your final work, respond to your supervisor and stand behind what you submit.

We work inside your institution’s rules

Universities and nursing programs differ in what they allow. Your handbook, supervisor guidance and assessment rules come first. If a form of assistance is prohibited, we will not present it as acceptable simply because it can be done.

Sources should be traceable

A reference is useful only if it is real, relevant and used for a reason. We do not believe in filling pages with citations for appearance. Research support should make the evidence trail clearer, not harder to verify.

Clinical and research data deserve care

Nursing projects can involve sensitive patient, participant and organisational information. Identifiable data should be removed or anonymised wherever possible before files are shared, and unnecessary confidential information should not be collected.

What this means in a nursing project

Nursing work adds another layer of responsibility because academic decisions can sit close to clinical practice. A care plan, DNP scholarly project, evidence based practice paper or systematic review is not just an exercise in sounding academic. The reasoning matters. Clinical claims need appropriate evidence. Research methods need to fit the question. Limitations need to be acknowledged rather than hidden.

If you are working on a PICOT question, for example, our job is not simply to make the sentence look polished. We should be asking whether the population is defined, whether the intervention is realistic, whether the outcome can be measured and whether the question can actually be searched. That is the kind of support that helps you make a stronger academic decision.

Authorship, acknowledgement and outside support

Requirements around declaring editorial, methodological, statistical or other professional assistance vary between institutions, journals and projects. We therefore do not give one blanket rule and pretend it applies everywhere. Check your university policy, module handbook, supervisor guidance or target journal requirements. Where acknowledgement or disclosure is required, it should be made honestly.

You remain responsible for reviewing anything developed with our support, checking that it accurately reflects your project, verifying sources and data, and ensuring that your final use complies with the rules that apply to you.

We would rather tell you “no” than create a problem for you later

Sometimes responsible support means declining a request or changing the way we approach it. If something appears to cross an academic, research or clinical boundary, we will say so and, where possible, suggest a legitimate form of support instead. A deadline is important. Protecting your degree, professional standing and research integrity is more important.
